Hardware Review: PC Engine Mini

Image
Konami – which is now the custodian of the PC Engine brand following its purchase of Hudson Soft in 2011 – is perhaps a little late to the party with its take on the 'micro-console' concept that kicked off with the Nintendo Classic Edition a few years back. Since then, we've seen SNK, Sony and Sega all jump on board the retro money train, often with wildly varying degrees of success. However, while the Neo Geo Mini and Mega Drive Mini both offered up a selection of games that will be familiar even to the most casual of retro gaming fans thanks to the fact they've been released (and re-released) on a wide range of digital storefronts over the past decade, the PC Engine Mini (alongside its western counterpart, the TurboGrafx-16 Mini) offers up a library of games that's a little more off the beaten track. That's not to say it lacks quality – quite the opposite, in fact – and with emulation expert M2 doing the heavy-lifting (just as it did with Sega's micro-co

Florida mini-tour continues during COVID-19 pandemic but with extreme safety measures

Image
After spending days meticulously planning how to run a golf tournament during a global pandemic, Christian Bartolacci nearly saw his thorough efforts upended by Mother Nature. Bartolacci is the executive director of the West Florida Golf Tour, a barebones developmental circuit that normally wouldn't garner much attention. But that dynamic changes when tours around the world shut down in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and you're one of the few circuits in the country still operating. With millions of Americans under orders to shelter in place and practice social distancing, the WFGT conducted an 18-hole event called the "Ritz Carlton Series 4" Monday in Bradenton, Florida. Bartolacci had taken significant measures to ensure the safety of his players as coronavirus cases in Florida and around the country continue to spiral. He felt good about his preparations – until he arrived at a course blanketed in a thick layer of fog. "We had an hour fog delay, which threw

Apple's modest Mac Mini update: Twice the storage for the same price

Image
Alongside a new MacBook Air and iPad Pro, Apple has introduced a new version of its diminutive desktop computer, the Mac Mini. The new Mac Mini is available for preorder online now and will ship next week. 9to5Mac first reported the update. The step-up model, which now features a 512GB SSD, costs $1,099 -- the same price that would get you a 256GB Mac Mini before. Otherwise, the specs and features are unchanged from the previous generation Mac Mini: eighth-gen Intel processors (six- and quad-core options available) with integrated graphics, up to 64GB of 2,666MHz DDR4 memory, four Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI 2.0

Razer Viper Mini Gaming Mouse Review

Image
Razer made waves last year with the launch of its brand-new Razer Viper line of gaming mice. Featuring optical switches, high-end sensors, and lightweight bodies, the Viper and Viper Ultimate, promised to be Razer's fastest and most responsive mice yet. With the popularity of ultralight mice, like the Glorious PC Gaming Race Model O, it was only a matter of time before Razer released its own ultralight mouse onto the market. It's been six months but the wait is finally over. The Razer Viper Mini has arrived and trimmed the already slight Viper down to 61 grams, making it Razer's lightest ever. That's not all that's been trimmed down, though: the Viper Mini comes to market at only $39.99, a full half the price of the original. It's a compelling offer, but has anything been left on the cutting room floor? I've gone hands-on to find out exactly that. Design and FeaturesThe Razer Viper Mini blends the best of the original Viper and improved Viper Ultimate into on

TurboGrafx 16 Mini Delayed Due to Coronavirus

Image
Coronavirus could have a rather disastrous impact on the video game industry, as a whole. The fact of the matter is that a lot of console parts are manufactured in China, where the virus has hit the hardest. As a result, Nintendo Switch units are expected to become quite a bit scarcer, and one retro console has now been delayed as a direct result of the virus. Konami has officially announced a delay for the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, for an indefinite amount of time. The system was set to go on sale March 19th. Konami released a statement, explaining the delay. "We deeply apologise to our customers for the significant inconvenience, and we humbly ask for your understanding and patience while we keep our close attention on the situation. We are investing all of our efforts to deliver the PC Engine Core Grafx Mini as soon as possible, and will provide further details on the deliver timing once confirmed." Retro consoles have been around for quite some time, but t

Konami Delays Release of TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine Mini Console Due to Impact of Coronavirus

Image
Console's manufacturing, shipping facilities in China suspended due to virus Konami announced on its website for the TurboGrafx-16 mini console on Friday that it is delaying the release of the console. The company stated, "the manufacturing and shipping facilities in China have encountered an unavoidable suspension due to the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. As a result, the delivery of all TurboGrafx-16 mini products, which was originally scheduled for March 19th, 2020, will be delayed until further notice." The company said it will provide more details once the timing is confirmed to ship the console. The console is a compact device pre-loaded with games from the catalog of NEC's original TurboGrafx-16 console. The console was originally slated to launch in North America, Europe, and Japan on March 19. The European release is named the PC Engine CoreGrafx mini, while the Japanese release is named the PC Engine mini. The Europe

Konami’s TurboGrafx-16 mini has been delayed due to coronavirus

Image
The TurboGrafx-16 is the latest system from the late '80s and early '90s to get a mini console revival and join the likes of the Nintendo NES Classic Edition and Sega Genesis Mini. Fans will have to wait, though, as production has been delayed indefinitely for both the western TurboGrafx-16 mini and the Japanese PC Engine Core Grafx mini consoles -- and you know why. Konami said in a statement on Twitter that "the manufacturing and shipping facilities in China have encountered an unavoidable suspension due to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. As a result, the delivery of all PC Engine Core Grafx mini products, which was originally scheduled for March 19th, 2020, will be delayed until further notice." This news isn't shocking -- some factories in China have already shut down due to coronavirus fears and infections. The TurboGrafx-16 mini and PC Engine Core Grafx mini seem like they could be promising products. The North American and European versions of

New iMac and Mac Mini are coming soon, cryptic tweet suggests

A new iMac and Mac Mini are on the way, a noted leaker has suggested in a recent tweet. The CoinX Twitter account posted a cryptic tweet simply reading "iMac/Mac mini," followed by a "Soon" emoji — while the tweet was light on detail, there are reasons to believe its veracity. According to MacRumors, CoinX has a reliable track record when it comes to Apple leaks, sharing information regarding the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR names before they were common knowledge, as well as the "Pro" name for the latest iPhone models. It has also leaked accurate details about the 10.2-inch iPad and 10.5-inch iPad Air, suggesting it has well-placed sources somewhere in the Apple supply chain. Other than the suggestion that a new iMac and Mac Mini could be on the horizon, few details have been shared about either device. However, as we said in our review of the latest iMac, its design is looking rather long in the tooth these days, so a redesign would be welcome.
